Ask your doctor before using massage for any health condition.

So you’re set to go out for a massage session, but do you know of the different styles and benefits you will be choosing and receiving? Before you can decide which massage style is best suited for you, you need to ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you simply want a massage for relaxation and stress control?
  • Do you need symptom relief or help with a certain health condition?

Here’s a little eye opener on some of the best massage styles to choose from with their purposes.

Swedish Massage:

One of the most widely known massages is the Swedish massage. The technique uses five styles of strokes. The five basic strokes are kneading, rhythmic tapping, friction, vibration and sliding/gliding. All this is combined with movement of the joints. Swedish therapy can be both relaxing and energising as it relieves muscle tension and may even help after an injury.

Neuromuscular Therapy Massage:

This type of therapy is a form of soft tissue manipulation therapy. Its aim is to treat underlying causes of chronic pain, involving the muscular and nervous systems. Being a medically-orientated form of massage, it addresses trigger points, circulation, nerve compression, postural issues, and biomechanical problems that can be caused by repetitive movement injuries.

Deep Tissue Massage:

This type of massage involves working on the body with pressure. The technique uses slow, deliberate strokes that deliver pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under your skin. This technique is less rhythmic than other types of massage, but it can still be quite therapeutic. It helps relieving chronic tension patterns and helps with muscle injuries. The massage can promote relaxation as well as well-being.

Reflexology:

This type of massage involves the application of pressure to the feet and hands; using specific hand, finger and thumb motions. Massage therapists don’t use oils or lotions in the process. The areas receiving attention in the process are believed to correspond with different parts of the body with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.

 Sports Massage:

It is also known as manual therapy or manipulative therapy. It is a physical treatment primarily used to help with muscle systems used for a particular sport. It is used as an approach to help athletes in training. It might use it to promote flexibility and help prevent injuries. It may help muscle strains, aiding healing after a sports injury.

Thai Massage:

During a Thai massage, the therapist uses his/her body to move the client into various positions. This type of massage includes compression of muscles, mobilisation of joints, and acupressure. It combines both physical and energetic aspects.

Hot Stone Massage:

For this type of massage, the therapist places warmed stones on certain areas of the body, such as acupressure points, using them as massage tools. They may also be left on the body for a temporary time. Hot stones can be quite soothing and relaxing as they apply heat deep into the body when used alongside other massage techniques.
